alternative
A Geekbot alternative you can buy yourself
Short answer: no, you do not need your manager's permission, and there is no subscription. Statusly is $29 once, for one person, and it is bought with your own card.
The longer answer is that Statusly is not the same kind of tool. Geekbot is a collection mechanism: it asks you the standup question in Slack, on schedule, reliably. Statusly writes the answer from your own notes and remembers it for tomorrow.
Try the part Geekbot leaves to you.
5 free a month. No signup to try the first one.
scraps
Half sentences are fine.
Sat 31 Oct
Nothing to report.
Nothing planned yet.
Nothing blocking.
Paste anything on the left. Half sentences are fine.
5 of 5 free updates left in October. the Pass
Statusly rewrites what you actually did. It does not invent work, and it never will.
What Statusly hands you
This is what the box produces from four lines of mess. Paste it straight into the channel Geekbot posts to.
*Done* • Rebased auth-refactor onto main. 3 tests still red, all in the session suite. • Shipped webhook retries with 3-try backoff. *Next* • Fix the session tests, then look at the flaky migration. *Blocked* • Waiting on Priya for the staging key, 3 days.
Geekbot and Statusly, side by side
Both are honest tools with different jobs. This is the difference, not a list of things they get wrong.
What it does
Asks you the standup questions in Slack on a schedule, collects the answers, posts them to a channel.
Writes the update from the scraps you paste, in Done / Next / Blocked, ready to post.
Who buys it
Your manager or team lead, per participant, for the whole team.
You, with your own card, for yourself. No approval, no procurement.
Price
Free up to 10 users, then roughly $2.50 to $3 per participant each month, forever.
$29 once. Nothing recurring, nothing to cancel. Free tier is 5 updates a month.
Memory
Keeps a history of what was submitted, as a record for the team.
Uses yesterday to pre-fill today. What you said you would do next arrives already in Done.
The blank box
Arrives on time, every morning, empty.
Arrives half-written, so you are correcting rather than writing.
Where it lives
Inside Slack or Teams, as a bot that DMs you.
A page you open, or a nudge email at your standup time. It never DMs you on anyone's behalf.
Team features
Team reports, multiple standups, dashboards, integrations.
None yet. One person, one log. A team pass gets built when people ask for it.
A template still leaves you an empty box tomorrow.
This page helps once. What makes the morning stop hurting is that Statusly keeps yesterday, so what you said you would do next is already sitting in today’s Done, waiting for you to confirm it or correct it.
The blocker you never cleared is still flagged, because you never said it cleared. Correcting an update takes 30 seconds. Writing one from nothing is what you have been avoiding.
carry-over
You said you’d write the retry tests. Done?
Still blocked on Priya, 3 days.
The scraps box is empty, and optional.
Can Statusly replace Geekbot for my team?
Not today. Geekbot collects from a whole team and Statusly writes for one person. If your team needs collection, keep Geekbot and use Statusly to fill it in.
Does it post to Slack automatically?
No. You press "Copy for Slack" and paste. There is no Slack app to install and nothing to ask IT about.
Is $29 really one payment?
Yes. One payment, unlimited updates, one person, no renewal. A year of the cheapest standup bot costs more than that.
What happens to my log if I never buy the Pass?
It stays yours and stays readable. The free tier is 5 updates a month, and the limit never deletes anything.
